When a child is born, it is given a name which becomes the foundation of the mental image of “me” or “I”.
As the child grows it solidifies its “I" identity in the world by adding attributes such as personal preferences, qualifications, jobs, possessions, social connections and political views to who the “I” thinks it is. All of these concepts make up and establish the “I” as a unique and isolated unit in the world. Only rarely do humans recognise the fact that the “I” is a fiction of the mind.
The consumer culture which is destroying the planet is largely enabled by a lack of recognition of the falseness of the “I” structure. Clambering for more identity and sensual gratification, disconnected “I”s unconsciously consume at a rate which the planet cannot sustain.
The solutions to our external challenges might best be sought through an inward journey. Individual, internal examination of the “I” structure can reveal it’s illusion and begin an exploration of the infinite .
"But if I am not my job, possessions, relationships or even my name then, who am I?"
